Learning, Coaching & Wet Weather Fun 🌧️🏁
February didn’t bring a race meeting straight away, but it turned out to be one of those months that still adds a lot to a season. Between helping a friend take his first steps in outdoor karting and a seriously wet Academy day at Whilton Mill, there was plenty of seat time, learning, and a bit of fun along the way.
As part of this season review series, not every post is just about race results — some of the most important moments happen on days like these.
Karting With Friends – Camberley
One of the highlights of the month was a private hire day at Camberley, where one of my best mates came along to drive my spare kart.
It was his first time driving outdoors, so straight away it was about getting comfortable — learning the feel of the kart, understanding braking points, and building confidence lap by lap. Private hire days are perfect for that because there’s no pressure, just track time and learning.

This was also the first time I’d properly done driver coaching, and it was really cool to see how much difference it made. A few simple changes to lines, braking, and approach to corners knocked chunks off his lap times pretty quickly. Seeing that improvement happen in real time was a great feeling.
Meanwhile, it was a busy day for Dad, who was on full mechanic duty running two karts at once — not the easiest job, but all part of the behind-the-scenes effort that makes these days possible.
Because it was a private hire, we also took the chance to:
- Practice start procedures
- Run different scenarios
- And, importantly, have a bit of fun with it
Not every karting day needs to be flat-out racing — days like this are a reminder of why we all enjoy the sport in the first place.
Club100 Academy Day – Whilton Mill
Later in the month came a very different challenge: a Club100 Academy day at Whilton Mill.
This was part of the prize from finishing Vice Champion in the 2024 BIKC, so it was great to finally get on track and make the most of it.
The conditions, though… were something else.
It was a very wet day, and we were running slick tyres — which made Whilton Mill incredibly tricky. Grip was limited, visibility wasn’t great, and every lap demanded full concentration. It was one of those days where smoothness mattered more than aggression, and mistakes were punished instantly.
Despite that, it was honestly a lot of fun.

Across the day, the pace was strong, and I ended up being the fastest driver on track in my group throughout the sessions. In conditions like that, confidence and control make a massive difference, and it was really satisfying to see everything come together.

Days like this are huge for development — learning how to read grip levels, adapt driving style, and stay consistent when conditions are far from ideal.
February in Perspective
February might not have had a race trophy at the end of it, but it delivered:
- Valuable seat time
- First experiences coaching another driver
- A challenging wet-weather Academy day
- And more confidence heading into the next race events
- A half-term holiday in Lanzarotte, (and yes, I even had a go in the Karts at the track there too, but they were the speed of a lawnmower. lol)
All of it feeds into the bigger picture of the 2025 season.
The next post will take us back into full race mode — and things only get busier from here.
